THE ISSUES

Crime

Beverly's Statement:

Over the years Oakland has battled the murders in the City. There have been years that were much worst than others. We've discussed what we thought the problem was, one thing then another. We scream more police on the streets build more prisons or give longer sentences, enhanced sentences, but nothing has changed.

The city unanimously passed a measure that will provide $7.7 million to recruit sorely needed new officers to the OPD. What do you think are the best ways to expand and improve the police force? (Borrowed from the East Bay Young Democratic Club).

More on Crime:

Major challenges are crimes such as black on black murders, and murder in general. I will be looking into a food program for youth who need healthy food to prevent chemical imbalances (from drug use) that add to the lack of control that youth and others have that lead to agitation. Drugs deplete the body nutritionally and enhance anger and other social ills.

I hope to partner with other food providers to make this happen. We feed the elderly, indigent, children, etc. I feel that we should feed the parolees that are released from prison with two hundred dollars and a dependency on family, girl friends, etc., and when this doesn't work where do they go? We treat them like they are invisible. Felonies prevent acquisition of jobs. I think this is the first line of defense against recidivism. It shows concern and love of humanity.
