THE ISSUES
I think the main issues to be addressed by the City Council in my opinion are the murders in Oakland, the immigrant population who desperately want citizenship and the lack of sufficient staff for the inner core of the police department; such as the theft department and burglary departments. Crime takes on a chronic nature if there is no immediate intervention.
Beverly's Statements
CRIME
Over the years Oakland has battled the murders in the City. There have been years that were much worst than others. We've discussed what we thought the problem was, one thing then another. We scream more police on the streets build more prisons or give longer sentences, enhanced sentences, but nothing has changed.
The city unanimously passed a measure that will provide $7.7 million to recruit sorely needed new officers to the OPD. What do you think are the best ways to expand and improve the police force? (Borrowed from the East Bay Young Democratic Club).

IMMIGRATION
As a long time resident of the Fruitvale District I have an overview of how people live and what their families mean to them.
Immigrants are people who came here with a dream of citizenship and betterment of their family economic status. My concern is that it takes to long for citizenship to occur for those persons that either can't afford the fee; have to work long hours or don't speak the language.
Even though there are organizations such as the Unity Council or Spanish Citizen's Foundation there is still a need for assistance to navigate becoming a citizen.

EDUCATION
As Chairperson of the Fruitvale Community Development Council from the mid nineties to 2003 our Board of Directors was very involved with Calvin Simmons Middle School (Currently Peralta Creek and Leadership Academy). We made recommendation to fund programs to prevent the rampant truancy, instability of keeping a principal, and social problems in the school that needed intervention. One of the main problems was the truancy and non-credentialed teachers and control of classrooms.

ECONOMIC SPENDING POWER OF THE ELDERLY/YOUTH
Do you give your kids money to spend? Do ever think about there spending power in the economy? Collectively they are force to be reckoned with. They probably don't view themselves an economic base in the City of Oakland.
I think young people would work to earn income were jobs available to them in the City of Oakland. How do we make resident businesses and/or incoming businesses aware of this untapped economy in some instances?

MEDICAL BENEFITS
Many people are hard pressed for medical benefits. Those persons that are without benefits are usually seen in the emergency of hospitals. There is a company that for $1,000 per year will pay for the first 48 hours of emergency room care. This is very important because once a person is admitted to the house or routed to a clinic in the hospital there is medical coverage available on a sliding scale.

HOUSING
Affordable housing is a must for our young people, families and elderly citizens need affordable housing units. I am personally acquainted with the non-profit housing community in Oakland and know that they will respond as they have in the past.

CREDIT REPAIR
Excellent credit is needed to accomplish the goals of accumulating wealth. So many people don't seem to understand how important this is. Purchasing a home is one of the most important purchases you will ever make. Good credit is the wealth of people whose purchasing power is limited.
Low income housing (affordable) should be monitored by organizations, especially now, that the housing market is falling. We also need to teach young people how to build a good credit score that benefits them in getting a better interest rate when purchasing a home. Good credit can make a mortgage payment more affordable and save thousands of dollars that can be used elsewhere in the family budget.
Excellent credit is a way to take advantage of other opportunities as they present themselves.
